Being Concerned About One Issue Does Not Negate Worrying About Others
If you want to discuss, then discuss, don’t deflect.
Just because someone shows sympathy for one group’s plight does not mean that they don’t sympathize with others’ as well. There is so much evil and suffering in this world that it does no good to belittle someone who is trying to help a specific group of people.
I was recently reading a thread pertaining to the violence and prospective violence taking place in Afghanistan. Pleas for prayer from Christians residing there, knowing that their death is imminent, were met with “but what about people here at home?”
Just because I pray for those of a specific religion to not lose their lives due to their religious beliefs in a country that our soldiers were forced to abandon, does not mean that I don’t also pray for those in other dire situations.
I hold myself responsible to try and be the best person I can every day. I hope that my words and/or actions have somehow positively impacted at least one person. I care deeply about a lot of very diverse issues that are taking place in our world today. Nowhere have I ever seen that you have to pick a stance on one subject and stick with it. This is not debate class.
This is the real world. It is a scary, violent, and heartless world. One person or group cannot solve all of the world’s problems, but all of the world could come together to solve a few. If you feel that something you care deeply about is not receiving the attention or support that it deserves, then YOU go out into the world, do the work, be the change, and make a difference. Or at least try.
