Whether or not you believe in ghosts or the supernatural, sometimes things are witnessed that simply can’t be explained. The following locations are a smorgasbord of creepy with a side of history.

Keep in mind that history isn’t always pretty, so I will give a trigger warning for mentions of murder, suicide, and slavery.

Pickens County Courthouse — Carrollton

Note: I have found several different variations of this story, but pieced this together using the most frequented accounts by the most trusted sources.

Visible since 1878, “The Face in the Courthouse Window” at the Pickens County Courthouse is pointed out by an arrow. The story was highlighted in Kathryn Tucker’s Southern favorite, 13 Alabama Ghosts and Jeffrey.

The legend tells of Henry Wells, a former slave who was freed at the end of the Civil War. He was arrested and convicted for allegedly burning down the newly built courthouse in 1876…
