How the Women of the Geats Defeated an Entire Rival Army
Mead, Meals, and Murder
Blenda remains a heroine of Swedish folklore. Her courage, ingenuity, and quick thinking saved her people from a horrifying fate. Before the fateful day, she was just a Viking noblewoman, a subject of the King Alle, King of the Geats. She was also very trusted by the King, which is why he tasked her to watch over the women and children of Smaland while he and the men launched an attack on Norway. However, by taking all the soldiers from his home region to expand the reaches of his kingdom, the king inadvertently exposed it to attacks from their adversaries.
The Swedish Invasion
Word spread to the Danish of the South that Smaland had been left defenseless and they seized the opportunity to invade. Blenda received a notice that the Danish army was on its way. She weighed her options and had to come up with a plan quickly.
The Danish were known not to spare even women nor children. When they invaded territories, they pillaged villages, raped women, and killed anyone who was left. Blenda knew that if they fled, they would eventually be found and executed. However, if they stayed, they would face the same fate. What could the women of the Geats do to defend their lives and their home?
