Lol. South Alabama here. Definitely a ma'amer for life. It's definitely engrained. I have tried and tried to instill it in my 7 year old, but apparently he has the same feelings as you do. And that's ok! As long as he responds with "Yes" or "yes please" instead of "yeah" or "ugh huh" to an adult, I'm ok with that. It has started to fizzle out a bit, even here.
