The Case of 100,000 Stolen Eggs Has Yet to Be Cracked

Authorities in Pennsylvania are still investigating the theft of approximately 100,000 eggs from a distribution trailer in Greencastle, PA, according to the Pennsylvania State Police. The eggs were taken on February 5, 2025, at approximately 8:40 p.m. from Pete & Gerry’s Organics, one of the country’s leading free-range egg producers.

Eggs have become scarce in some areas of the country due to the avian flu outbreak killing millions of hens during November and December of 2024. Those who do have the luxury of finding them in their grocery stores are having to dig a bit deeper in their wallets to buy them.

It’s reported that the average price for a dozen, large, grade-A eggs rose to $4.15 in December, up from $3.65 in November. They are predicted to rise another 20% within the year.

The value of the stolen eggs has been estimated at $40,000, making the crime a felony.

“We take this matter seriously and are committed to resolving it as quickly as possible,” Pete & Gerry’s said in a statement to USA TODAY.
