When my husband I were dating and we went out to eat with his family, I was appaled to find out that his grandfather did NOT tip. AT ALL. His explanation "well, they already get paid. I shouldn't have to pay them more in addition to the price of my meal.". As a former server, I explained to him that yes, they did get paid in addition to tips, but only around $2.00 an hour. He honestly did not know this. He was a self-made business man and very intelligent, but he could not wrap his brain around the fact that employers were getting away with not paying their employees even minimum wage (which still isn't a liveable wage). From then on, he tipped 50% or more because he felt so terrible about his ignorance (and he could afford it).
