The Pamakkule Pools

Another week, another gorgeous location that nature has created! For this week’s “Where in the World?”, we are going return to another location that can attribute its fame and beauty to one of our most invaluable natural resources, water.

What are the Pamakkule Pools?

The Pamukkale Pools, known as “the white paradise”, are limestone terraces and travertines made up of natural hot springs. The travertines were formed thousands of years ago after a series of European and Asian earthquakes.

In total, there are 17 total springs in the area with temperatures ranging from 95 degrees Farenheit to 212 degrees Farenheit. While some are obviously not suitable for swimming, those that are cool enough to bask in are believed to have curative powers. They measure 8,860 feet long, 1,970 feet wide, and 525 feet high.

The Pools are located in Pamukkale, a city in southernwestern Turkey in the province of Denizli. Pamukkale means “cotton castle” in Turkish, which describes this area perfectly. It is located in the River Menderes Valley, which has a temperate climate most of the year.
